Opening Statement

Less well known and often “invisible”, black and African heritage classical composers span three centuries and come from the continents of Europe, Africa, and the Americas. In an effort to increase awareness, a website has been developed to unveil and to recognize black composers and their creative output within the rich tapestry of classical music.

Please offer your thoughts, feedback and information.

Thanks for the resource! Not nearly enough attention is given this fascinating segment of American music.

I’m wanting to know more about Julius Eastman. Any suggestions?

How I wish to God it was merely a "misconception" on my part that children of [White] color are being discriminated against by the Sphinx Organization's exclusive programs for Black and Latinos!

Why do I remain unconvinced? Consider the following, review the evidence, and come to your own conclusions and act accordingly:

Sphinx Organization isn't Racist?

Let men and women of goodwill, of every color and creed, condemn the present practice of discrimination the Sphinx Organization hypocritically engages in.

Thank you.

Hello Dr. Greene!
I am a Master's student currently doing independent research about composers of African Descent in classical music. I am looking for information and hopefully as a vocalist, i hope to present a concert of my findings. I know there are many contemporary composers but i am also trying to go back as far as i can and then narrow the works down from there. If you have any information that can help, it would be greatly appreciated!

Dear Richard,
I hope that your site encourages many to listen to and to perform this wonderful and overlooked music. Building on your site, I have begun Black Composers - Scores, where clicking on the composer's name will get to their works on WorldCat, the online catalog of thousands of libraries worldwide. Musicians will be able to know what libraries have the music, and will be able to get the music on interlibrary loan. I hope that many musicians will use this and perform this wonderful music. The site is at https://sites.google.com/a/temple.edu/black-composers/

Best wishes,
Anne Harlow
